Creating Thin Provisioned Volumes with the Atlas S8+
The Atlas S8+ allows the creation of thin provisioned iSCSI LUNs. A thin provisioned LUN will be created at a certain size. As this storage is filled, it can easily be extended to give the user more storage.
To create a thin provisioned iSCSI LUN, in the Control Panel select Storage, iSCSI and select the Setup tab. In Setup, click the Create button.
Select Create a target and map a LUN. Click Next.
Give the target a name, iSCSI01 is used here, enter CHAP credentials if CHAP is to be used and configure header and data digests if required. Do not select Allow multiple sessions from one or more iSCSI initiators unless the storage is to be used with a clustered filesystem like VMfs.
First, specify LUN name, here the LUN is given the same name as the target, iSCSI01. Next we specify how the LUN is to be provisioned, Thin Provisioned LUN or a Thick Provisioned. Select Thin Provision and specify a LUN size. You can disable compression if desired, but it is a good idea to leave it at the default, which is enabled.
This is the Summary page, if everything is correct, click Confirm.
We have a confirmation dialog that the thin provisioned LUN and target have been created and mapped.
From the iSCSI page we can now see the LUN and target, both names iSCSI01.
A newly created target is OFF by default; click the Target information button to enable the target.
The LUN can now be seen by giving the iSCSI initiator the IP address of any of the Atlas S8+'s network ports.
To increase the size of the LUN, click on the LUN and select Edit from the gear menu.
You can edit the LUN capacity here.
This LUN was changed from 100GB to 200GB. Click Next.
You get a confirmation that your LUN has been successfully modified.
The LUN is now 200GB.
All that is needed now is to increase the filesystem size from the storage client. In Windows, open Disk Management, rescan the disks and extend the filesystem to use the additional space. This step requires administrative privilege.
