Creating Shared folders on the Atlas S8+
Introduction:
With normal user accounts, users will be given a home folders, and every user's home folder will be inaccessible to other users. This is the normal privacy mechanism for Windows, Unix, Linux and macOS. But shared storage is often used for collaberation, where multiple users will work in the same storage space and often edit or view the same files. This KB shows how to create such a shared space and how to grant users access to it.
Creating a shared folder:
After being configured, the Atlas S8+ will have only a System area created. Shared folders must be created in a storage Volume, the first step is to create a storage Volume.
Login to the management console (ASM) as 'admin' and navigate to Control Panel > Storage > Volume and click Create.
Enter a Volume name, here it's 'Shared' the seclect a storage pool if there is more than one pool, enter it's capacity, here 5000GB has been entered, and if desired deselect compression or change the compression mode.
Click Next. You will see a Summary If all is correct click Confirm.
A Volume named Shared has now been created.
A shared folder can now be created in the Shared Volume.
Navigate to Control Panel > File Sharing > Folder and select the Shared Folder tab on top.
Click Create to create a shared folder.
Enter a name for the folder, here it's NASshare, enter a description, select a size for the folder (it cannot be larger than the Volume), and click Confirm
A Shared folder named NASshare has now been created.
Granting access rights to a shared Folder:
Once created users need acess permissions to the shared folder. Local users can be created in Control Panel > File Sharing > User. As you can see here there are 3 users and the admin user.
From the Shared Folder screen, scroll to the bottom with the scrollbar to the right.
Select the appropriate access rights for your users and click apply.
The users will be able to access the shared folder from their computers with any access privilege assigned to the user name, the default acces privilege includes access by AFP, CIFS/SMB, ftp and WebDAV.
