"OSStatus error 17" message

After upgrading to OSX High Sierra, some Mac users may encounter a problem with Time Machine backing up to external device, including Apollo Cloud, and pop up an error message "Time Machine can't connect to the backup disk. The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 17.)"

To solve this problem,

Go Time Machine Preference to remove Apollo Disk and select it again. When the authentication prompt comes up, DO NOT enter anything but keep the authentication prompt open;

Go Apollo icon on the top menu bar. Select Folder Mount Status and turn off Apollo Time Machine to make it unmounted, or eject from Finder shared Apollo Time Machine;

Sign in to the waiting prompt;

Turn on Time Machine Status on Apollo.

Now the Apollo Time Machine disk should be added and connected.

Apollo and Apollo Cloud 2 Duo FAQ.

Question 1: Is the Apollo upgradable?

While the hardware is not upgradable, new features have been added in software updates. The Apollo firmware can be easily updated from the Apollo app.

Question 2: Is the Apollo expandable?

An Apollo (Apollo 1 or Cloud 2 Duo) can be mirrored to an identical Apollo (same model, drive size and drive configuration). The mirror is created with the Apollo app and the initial mirror operation should be done with both Apollos on the same network.

Question 3: Can a failed Apollo hard drive be replaced by the user?

At this time drives are not user replaceable, in case of a drive failure please contact Technical Support for an RMA of the Apollo.

Question 4: Does Promise Offer Drive replacements for the Apollo Cloud 2 under warranty?

If a drive fails, please contact Technical Support and Promise will RMA the Apollo.

If the Apollo is a Cloud 2 Duo with a RAID 1, be sure to copy your data off before RMAing the Apollo.

Tips for Restoring an Entire Mac System Disk from an Apollo Time Machine Backup

If your Mac OS X system disk has an issue or you would like to migrate your Mac OS X system disk content to another system, you could restore the entire Mac OS X system disk from the Apollo Time Machine Backup.

When your Mac OS X system boots to recovery mode and you select "Restore From Time Machine Backup", you could use the Apollo Time Machine Backup as your source disk. However, you must pay attention on the required steps before proceeding with the restoring process.

1) Your Apollo unit and the Mac system you're recovering must be connected to the same network and under the same subnet IP address. In a home network environment, all network equipment will be using the same subnet IP address from the home network modem/gateway/router. In an office network environment, the subnet IP address of the Apollo (wired network connection) may not be the same subnet IP address of your Mac system (wireless office network). In that case, you may use an Ethernet wired connection from you Mac system to the same network switch where the Apollo unit is connected.

2) After the Mac system boots to recovery mode and you select the Apollo Time Machine as your Backup source, you will be prompted for your credentials to access the backup source. At this point, you must type in "admin" in the Name field and type in your Apollo account password at the Password field. Do NOT use your Mac system's credentials for the username and password.

3) If you had enabled the "Encrypt Backup Disk" option on your Time Machine Backup, you will be prompted to type in the password before the restoring process starts. This password was set the first time you created the Time Machine Backup for your Mac. Please make sure to type the password correctly. It is the only key to access and open your encrypted Time Machine Backup files. Your Mac keychain and Apollo cannot help you to retrieve the password at this point.

Once your Time Machine Backup source disk and files are recognized, you can proceed to select which date of the backup you wish to restore.

How to sync files from your Mac to your Apollo Cloud storage

How to sync files from your Mac to your Apollo Cloud storage:

Open the Apollo Utility on your Mac.

Click on the gear on the toolbar at the top.

Click on the Selective Sync option.

Use the local folder path to locate where files are synchronized from on your Mac. The easiest way to do this is to open Finder and click Apollo on the Favorites list.

Move or Copy a folder on your Mac to this location.

Although it is checked by default, ensure that the sync box is checked for any this and any folder you want to keep synchronized.

Click the Save button to complete setting up your synchronized folder.

Now any files that you add, delete, or modify in this folder will be synchronized to a folder with the same name on your Apollo.

This means that changes to the folder are automatically made to the Apollo, so there is no need to manually copy files from your Mac to the Apollo.

Any files that you move or copy to this folder will also be available to any mobile device, such as your iPhone, iPad, or Android, sing the Apollo Cloud app.

Note that any changes that you make to this folder on your mobile device by adding, modifying, or deleting a file will be propagated to the Apollo folder.

Also note that you should exercise caution when deleting a file from the local folder on your Mac as it will be deleted from the Apollo folder as well when the synchronization occurs.

Time Machine Backup pop up error message

When a user runs a Time Machine Backup from their Mac system to Apollo, sometimes an error message may pop up stating the backup disk image is already in use.

This error message indicates that some other user or computer is using the backup disk (or was using it, but didn't get disconnected properly), so Time Machine now can't access it.

Another reason that could result in this error is if the user changed the Apollo device's name after a Time Machine Backup was executed from the Mac to the Apollo.

To workaround this problem, the user should un-mount, and then re-mount the Time Machine target volume from the Apollo Utility.

Since the Apollo Time Machine Backup volume is always auto-mounted by default, users may not know it could be manually un-mounted.

To un-mount Time Machine Backup volume from Apollo:

(1) Click on the Apollo icon at the top menu bar

(2) Select and click on Turn Time Machine Automount Off

(3) After the Apollo Time Machine Backup volume is un-mounted

(4) Then select and click on Turn Time Machine Automount: On

(5) Manually start the Time Machine Backup one time and select the Apollo as a target disk.

2. Make sure the USB drive is plugged into the Apollo's USB3 Port. Click OK to continue the USB upload to your Apollo.

3. The files will be copied over the USB3 connection, and will be listed in your Apollo Utility once the files have successfully finished uploading to the Apollo drive.

4. The files that you uploaded from the USB drive to your Apollo will be located in a folder with the name of the USB drive's manufacturer/model name (USB_Alcor_3G in this example). You can modify the name of the folder or simply move the contents that you uploaded to a folder of your choice within the Apollo Utility.

5. Verify that all the files you uploaded from the USB drive exist in the folder.

After changing device name, contents of sync folder won't update.(Apollo Mac Utility 1.2.1.0)

In Apollo Mac Utility(1.2.1.0) if you change the Apollo device name then in some cases the utility will stop monitoring changes made to the local synchnoization folder and fail to send any file updates to the Apollo.

[Solution]

1. Pause and resume sync folder

2. Restart Mac Utility
